The familiar smell of stale urine clouded the air. I was plodding through the underground tunnels of Chicago, trying to remember what I came here for. “Here you go,” a scraggly, unkempt older man called out to me. Oh, yeah... I was starving. Greedily, I took the piece of tuna he handed me. It was gone in ten seconds flat.

Unfortunately, hunger was so prominent in my life that I barely noticed it anymore. It kind of just floated around in my subconscious like the smell of urine clouds the subways of this city.

I was lucky today. Someone took pity on me. This was my first meal in about 36 hours. Well, that’s unless you count stale bread crusts as a meal, which I certainly did not. I happily ate them, but they were no meal.

My name is not important. It’s only a mask for my true identity. In my old life, I was pampered. I ate very well, exercised daily, and experienced great love. Erica was amazing. Most days I can block the painful memories of my past, but every once in a while, when the timing’s right, I yearn for it more than anything.

Funnily enough, it was mainly from kids. Kids are honest creatures. They like what they like and say what they mean. Most kids were very kind to me.

That’s how I first met Erica. I was very young when I met her. She saw me, took one look at me, and we both fell in love. I moved in with her shortly after. I especially loved sleeping in her warm, cozy bed. Nothing in my life had ever really been warm or cozy before, so I was almost always in that bed.

At first Erica was around all the time. We would do absolutely everything together. She would even take me on these really long day excursions with her girlfriends. Our destinations were many and our time together was so precious. One day, it all began to change. At first the changes were very subtle. For instance, some nights, Erica didn’t let me sleep with her. I didn’t think too much of it in the beginning and happily found my way to the couch. T...
